Artist Interview with Tess Smith-Roberts

What were you like as a kid? What did you want to be?

I was a typical girly girl who wanted to be a baker at one point, and then a vet. Eventually I realised that drawing was the only thing I wanted to do!

How has your art evolved in recent years, whether it is your approach, tools, subjects, etc.?

I think I’ve become more confident with my use of colour and in my actual work too. I also now put a smiley face on absolutely everything! There’s also a lot of fruit now compared to previous years…

Who or what are you inspired by right now?

Food is such a big inspiration right now, and old still life paintings.

What is an important lesson you've learned recently?

To slow down!

Whiled is about embracing downtime and slowing down. If you had one day with all the free time in the world...what would you do?

Every meal would be really fancy… pancakes for breakfast, homemade gnocchi for lunch, then maybe homemade pizza for dinner. With some baking in between (cookies probably!). I’d also do some painting, make some ceramics and then watch every single Tom Hanks movie.

What does the world need more of?

Simpsons arcade games

If your painting had a playlist to set the mood, what 3-5 songs would be on that playlist?

"Heart of Glass" - Blondie

"You Make My Dreams" - Hall & Oates

"This Must Be The Place (Naive Melody)" - Talking Heads

"Uptight (Everything’s Alright)" - Stevie Wonder

"Modern Love" - David Bowie
